Helen once happened to spill water on her apron. She spread it out to dry near the fire in the sitting room hearth. The apron was not drying fast to suit the mischievous Helen, so she drew nearer to the fire and threw the apron right on the hot coals. It caught fire almost immediately and next, Helen's clothes started burning up. Helen made a terrified noise, that her old nurse, Viny, heard and made her come to her rescue. The nurse threw a blanket on Helen, nearly suffocating her, but successfully managing to put out the fire. Helen was not badly burnt except her hair and her hands.
