Helen Keller understood abstract things such as love and emotions with the help of her teacher, miss Sullivan. she helped her cope up with life by teaching her how to read and write. there was once an incident in which miss sullivan took her to a water pump and gushed water on her hands and spelled water on her hand. this gave her a joy to learn about new things in this world.

One day Helen was stringing beads of different sizes in symmetrical groups. She made many mistakes and Miss Sullivan very patiently pointed them out again and again. Then Helen noticed a major error in the sequence and concentrated her attention on the lesson and tried to think how to arrange the beads correctly. Miss Sullivan touched her forehead and spelled with emphasis, Think. Immediately Helen understood that the word was the name of the process that was going on in her head. This was her first conscious perception of an abstract idea.
