Helen learned about plants and animals by actually keeping them and noticing their growth by touching them. For example, once she bought a lily and set it in a sunny window. Very soon the buds showed signs of opening. Helen touched all the developments that the plant showed everyday and wonder at its beauty and magnificence.
Similarly, once there were tadpoles in a glass globe set in widow full of plants. Helen took immense pleasure in plunging her hand into the bowl and feel the tadpoles frisk about. She felt their movements as they slipped and slid between her fingers. Once a tadpole jumped out of the bowl, and fell on the dry floor, where it appeared to be dead. The moment Helen put it back into the bowl, it darted all around in the globe. Thus Helen learned about plants and animals.
