Miss Sullivan, her teacher taught Helen by spelling the words on her hand. For example, she allowed water to flow on her hand and wrote water on the other hand, so Helen learned that the cool stream flowing on her hand was water. In this way Helen learnt about many things. Later she learned to read braille and raised type. By the age of nine she learned to speak and read lips.
She communicated by gestures that she wanted food.
