During the summer of 1886, Helen went with her parents to Baltimore to see a famous physician. She enjoyed the trip and behaved herself throughout. The family met Alexander Graham Bell who recommended that the Kellers hire a teacher to help their daughter. He told them to write to the Perkins Institution in Boston and get a competent teacher for her.
As a result of this Miss Sullivan became Helen's teacher and helped her to develop contact with the outside world. Her life changed from darkness into light, from isolation to friendship, companionship, knowledge and love.
