Explanation:
Hine worked in local factories as a youth and attended the State Normal School in Oshkosh as a young adult. Hine left Wisconsin for New York, where he became a teacher and school photographer. Hine was determined to teach his students compassion and respect for immigrants, so he began to photograph immigrants coming through Ellis Island. Soon Hine became a full-time photographer. He produced documentary photography for social reform. He showed the world the real people that he found with pictures and photo essays: Close -ups of children working, kids in mills, orphans on the streets, sweatshops, adult laborers, immigrant families, and struggling individuals.
