“My admiration for the person of the Duce remains unfaltering. But I regret not having listened to reason, which forced upon me a brutal friendship in regard to Italy.”—-Adolf Hitler, April 1945

Hitler had to invade Italy in 1943 for reasons both personal and political. The removal of Mussolini by the Fascist Grand Council, and his dismissal as Prime Minister by the king, followed by arrest and imprisonment, set a horrible precedent for what might occur in Germany. In fact, this was the original plan of the Operation Valkyrie plotters: remove Hitler, arrest him, do not kill him. This failed only when the conspirators realized the SS would never forsake Hitler, even if he was under guard. Hitler’s personal admiration for Mussolini undoubtedly played a significant role. He always spoke of how “The Black Shirts and the March on Rome” had inspired and emboldened the Brown Shirts in Germany.

The exit of Italy from the Axis, actually switching sides, meant that the nightmare scenario of the German-Italian war effort collapsing through what Churchill dubbed “the soft underbelly” of the Italian Peninsula could come true. The fall of North Africa, severe setbacks on the Eastern front and the Allied invasion of Italy did not afford Germany the luxury of allowing the North of Italy to surrender, either to the new Italian government or the Allied armies.

Finally, Hitler realized what a trap Italy would become to the Allies. Hitler put the brilliant General Kesselring, who interestingly never joined the Nazi Party or the SS, in charge of the Italian campaign. (Yes, I know, he later surrendered to the Americans.) Kesselring realized the key to victory was a war of attrition, making the Allies pay heavily for every mile, road and mountain of Italian territory. The taking of Rome by American General Mark Clark in June of 1944 proved a hollow victory. By then Kesselring had fortified his lines just north of Rome, and Hitler had already installed Mussolini as head of the Italian Social Republic at Salo, giving the remaining Fascists something and someone to fight for.
