There were dramatic changes in the idea of clothing in Europe after the 18th century. They reflected the political and cultural changes which included the American and French revolutions. The lavish clothing styles and ornamentation of the midcentury were replaced by a simpler style of dressing. The monarchs were no longer the trendsetters, instead fashion was inspired by the country and nature.
Men wore dark clothes and there was not much decoration. Women wore a simple white cotton dress which had a high waist and tiny sleeves. Earlier children used to wear smaller versions of adult clothes. But with the introduction of the idea of education for the children by Rousseau and Locke children started wearing simple loose cotton dresses. As they had to be free to play and develop as individuals.
