There were several factors that brought about a change in the condition of Indigo sharecroppers and overall disappearance of Indigo sharecropping from Champaran. The major role was of course played by Gandhiji who was adamant with British authorities to return 50% of the amount that they had illegally taken from the sharecroppers. He settled with 25% repayment because the idea was more about giving authority and confidence to the sharecroppers rather than being merely about the money. Rajkumar Shukla's role is important too. Had he not invited Gandhiji to Champaran, Gandhiji might have had no idea about the plight of sharecroppers.
