Rani Lakshmi Bai had been married to the maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar and gave birth to a child named Damodar Rao. He died after four months. The maharaja adopted a child, Anand Rao, who was the son of a cousin of Gangadhar Rao, and renamed him as Damodar Rao. The maharaja died the next day. As Damodar Rao was adopted, The British implemented the Doctrine of Lapse and asked Rani Lakshmi Bai to surrender Jhansi with an annual pension of Rs.60,000.
Rani of Jhansi held to her homeland and was reluctant to give it to the British. Then, the rumour started that the rifles which were given by the British had used pig fat as grease for lubrication. This started the Revolt of 1857. She was reluctant to rebel against them. But the revolt has started. Heavy bombardments on the fort were a result. Rani asked the British for help but no reply. Then, she surrendered the fort and palace to the British as she saw no other option than join Tantia Tope or Rao Sahib. She fled on her horse and then she joined the rebellion.

Few Indians may know that the British, who fought the plucky Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi during the Great Indian Mutiny of 1857-58, also admired her greatly. ... Not pretty and pock marked with small pox, but beautiful eyes and figure," noted Lord Canning, India's first Viceroy, in his private papers.
