Answer:

"Songwriting is about getting the demon out of me. It’s like being possessed. You try to go to sleep, but the song won’t let you. So you have to get up and make it into something, and then you’re allowed to sleep”

— John Lennon

There's no doubt that the former Beatle is one of the most revered songwriter in history.

His songs possess a deep cohesive quality. His deep insight into complex philosophical ideas, his great intellectual thinking ability, and that mixed with his talent for bringing out his delightful poetry proses into equally beautiful song lyrics- that's what makes him so unique.

If you look at his work closely, it might seem to you as if they were all written in one magical surge of inspiration, but that's not the case. His songs were usually pieced together from fragments that he brainstormed at different times.

During a 1968 interview, John indicated that even he wasn’t always sure during the writing process, stating, “I write lyrics that you don’t realize what they mean till after.” John further compared this type of writing to abstract art, saying, “It’s just that when you have to think about it to write it, it just means that you labored at it. But when you just say it, man, you know you’re saying it, it’s a continuous flow.”

He was much affected by Bob Dylan's work, and he greatly regarded Bob as his role model.

Plus he also did a lot of drugs (all 70s musicians did) and maybe that too brought out his creativity.

In any case, he still remains one of the most recognised figure in songwriting history and arguably one of the best.
