Answer:

Karna possessed a divine weapon called vasavi shakti, granted by the god Indra. It could be used only once, and Karna had been saving it to use on his arch-enemy, the best Pandava fighter, Arjuna. Unable to refuse Duryodhana, Karna used the Shakti against Ghatotkacha, killing him.

Explanation:

Ghatotkach was son of Bheema and Hidimbi (sister of Bakasura). He had lot of magical powers and a small army of rakshasas.

After Karna donated his natural armor to Indra, who came to Karna disguised as a Brahman. Impressed by “Daana Guna” of Karna, Indra granted him Vasavi Shakti, with condition that Karna could only use the weapon once. Upon learning this Krishna fears that, Karna might use Vasavi Shakti on Arjuna.

To avoid such situation, Krishna approaches and motivate Ghatotkach to join the war. As Ghatotkach was half rakshasa, he had right to attack in the night. So he enters Kurukshetra and starts attacking Kaurava sena from above clouds. Seeing this Duryodhan fears that the war might end that night, he being on the loosing side. He immediately runs to his dearest friend Karna and begs for his help.

While Karna was in dilemma, Duryodhan reminds him of Vasavi Shakti which was granted by Indra. Karna replies “I am saving it for Arjuna tomorrow”. Duryodhan replies “If you don’t kill that demon Ghatotkach now, there would be no tomorrow”. Agreeing with his friend, Karna fires Vasavi Shakti at Ghatotkach killing him instantly and saving Kaurava army.

Ghatotkach died as pawn played by Krishna to protect Arjuna in Kurukshetra war. Whatever happened was for greater good.
