The First world war ends with the defeat of Ottoman Turkey. And there was rumours that a harsh peace treaty was going to be imposed on the Ottoman Empire - the Spiritual head of Islamic world (the Khalifa). To defend the Khalifa's temporal powers, a khilafat committee was formed in Bombay in March 1919. Young generation of Muslim leaders like the brothers Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali began discussing with Mahatma Gandhi about the possibility of a United mass action on the issue.

Gandhiji considered it important to support Khilafat movement as he saw this as an opportunity to bring the muslims under the umbrella of a unified national movement.

In the First World War Turkey fought against the British. After the war, a defeated Turkey had to face atrocities by the British. In 1919 a movement was initiated against this injustice under the leadership of Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali , Abul Kalam Azad , Hazrat Mohani and other leaders.

● Actually the Emperor of Turkey was also known as the Khalifa (the religious head of Muslims). Hence the movement which was started to protest against injustices against Turkey was named 'Khilafat'.

● Gandhiji joined the "khilafat committee" considering it the right time for founding Hindu - Muslim unity.

●Congress gave it support too.

● Soon this movement of khilafat was unified with the anti-suppression movement in Punjab and independence struggle.
