ionic bond, also called electrovalent bond, type of linkage formed from the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. Such a bond forms when the valence (outermost) electrons of one atom are transferred permanently to another atom.

The formation of ionic bond was explained by Kossell as follows: * The atoms of inert gases are stable due to octet configuration (ns2np6) in their outer shell. Hence atoms must possess eight electrons in their outer shell to get more stability. This is referred to as octet rule.
