How did lord dalhousie expand the British territories in India? What meant by the policy of doctrine of lapse?

Lord Dalhousie was a member of East India company who issued the policy of doctrine of lapse to expand his territories. In doctrine of lapse when a king of a place died without a natural disease,his kingdom will be taken away by East India company.
