Lushkoff, is an alcoholic beggar who met Sergei, he offered him work to earn money but Lushkoff was unwilling to do the work.  

Yet the work of cutting the wood was completed and years after when  Sergei again met Lushkoff, he found out that he was no longer a beggar but a respectable notary.

Lushkoff told him that his maidservant had chopped the wood for him and her act of kindness  changed his life.
