He was an Italian Renaissance political statesman (and philosopher). He was secretary of the Florentine Republic. When Florence changed, his power was taken away. However, he wrote "The Prince". This is what he is most famous for. It explains how to become and remain the ideal (political) leader. One famous part of this writing is about how it is best to be loved and feared, but if you had to choose one or another, it is best to be feared. Some people agreed with this, and it was very controversial. My AP European History class had to repeatedly go over this writing, and so I can tell you that Machiavelli truly did contribute to the Renaissance.
