there were several reasons :-

. the need of iron for manufacturing weapons was available.
.the ganga tributaries provided cheap communication.
. policies of the well known kings like
mahapadmay Nanda, Chandragupta, Bindusaar, Ashoka...etc
. it's administration trading and military
