Around 1930s, the untouchables began to call themselves Dalits .

● The Congress ignored Dalits’ demands for fear of offending

Sanatanis, the conservative high-caste Hindus.

● Gandhiji declared Swaraj would not come for 100 years if

untouchability is not eliminated.

● He called them ‘ Harijans ’, he children of God.

● He organized Satyagraha to secure them into temples, access to public

wells, tanks, roads, schools etc.

● Cleaned toilets to dignify the work of Bhangi.

● Persuaded upper castes to give up the sin of untouchability.

● But when Dalits demanded separate electorates, Gandhiji

remarked that it would slow down the process of their integration into

society and began fast-unto-death.
