The Indigo farmers of Champaran race against the exploitative plantation system under the system, the farmers were bound by law to grow Indigo on 3 / 20 of their land and sell it to the British planters at prices fixed by them a commission of inquiry was to look into the issue. Gandhiji was one of its members. Gandhiji have little difficulty in convincing the commission that the plantation system should be abolished and the peasants should be compensated for the illegal enhancements of their dues .within a decade, the planters left the district.
