Mahmud was the ruler of Ghazni, a small kingdom in present day Afghanistan. He wanted to raise a large army to made Ghor the most powerful kingdom in the region. So, he invaded India to collect money to raise a large army.

He first defeated the Hindushahi rulers of Punjab. He defeated Jaipal and Anandpal and got a large tribute from them. He also invaded rich temple towns of India. He invaded Mathura and Kanauj in 1018 and the Somnath temple in 1026. He take all the booty to his own country and built a beautiful mosque, library and a museum. He died in 1030.
