Answer:

The hunger for his own freedom gradually turned into hunger for the freedom of his people. This desire of a non-racial society transformed him into a virtuous and self-sacrificing man. Thus, he joined the African National Congress and this changed the fearful man to a fearless rebel

Nelson Mandela's hunger for freedom turned from personal level to turn into a hunger for freedom for all his people.

Mandela realized in his youth that it was not just his freedom that was being curtailed, but the freedom of all blacks. The hunger for his own freedom gradually turned into hunger for the freedom of his people. This desire of a non-racial society transformed him into a virtuous and self-sacrificing man. Thus, he joined the African National Congress and this changed the fearful man to a fearless rebel. He sacrificed the comforts of a settled family life to fight for a greater cause.Mandela was not born with a hunger for freedom. But when he realized that his freedom had been taken away from him, he decided to get it. His decision made him hungry for freedom. Now he had changed in bold, and a man without home. He had won over the fear in his heart. He had only one dream and it was “freedom” to all.

Firts lets start with the brutal system which shaped his life. I would not call that hunger, i may call it anger. The system which ruled south Africa for 300 years could only breed people like Mandela, and am surprised that no militant leader came out of such an environment. I was expecting a Shaka of some sort in all those 300 hundred years. But we were so domiciled, so caged, so gospelled and castrated that we did not figure the way out ealier on.

Mandela was just one of the many lawyers in south Africa who naturally had to address the political issues of their time. ANC was not one person, it was a group of lawyers who naturally had to pursue politics. Mandela was actually sculpted by the system. So i would not call it hunger even though the story looks like he was hungry
