Because unlike the Mughals the Marathas had the people on their side. The Marathas main reason and hope for the future was self governance. The people of India who were about 50/50 Muslim and Hindu at the time (though up to half of the Muslims were just being Muslim for tax breaks) the Hindus and pretending Muslims wanted the Marathas to win. And wanted the Mughals to lose. With the people on their side in addition to the Mughals already in decline with rebellions everywhere in their empire, the Mughals were doomed. That is how the Marathas managed to conquer most of the subcontinent so fast.

If the people are on your side it is easy to conquer land. Indians had enough of oppression. The Marathas offered liberation which is why they were successful. It is unfortunate that the British got in their way or India might be a much better place right now.
