Marcy acted like an ideal wife in the story A Dog Named Duke. She stood by her husband during his very tough time after the accident and the ensuing paralytic recovery. She exhibited supreme patience and ideal values of a responsible wife. She didn't show her grief in front of Hooper lest it would further make him more miserable. Though not a dog lover herself, she took good care of Duke after Hooper's accident. She was sensitive to the great dog's unique qualities. She was grateful to Duke for helping her husband stand on his own feet. And at the end, when Duke was knocked over by a car, she immediately rushed him to the hospital; she was very much concerned about Duke. And finally the loss of Duke deeply affected her.

Mercy got the news of Chruck's accident and she rushed to the hospital. When she got to know about Chuck's condition that he had cerebral hemorrhage, she called up a neighbor to tell them to shift Duke to the kennel. Obviously, with her husband's critical condition she could not look after Duke well. All the while Chuck was in the hospital and after his coming back home, Mercy attended to his needs. She cried secretly looking at Chuck's depression after he hit a new low as he was left alone after Mercy left for work in the morning. Then she decides to bring Duke back who played a very important role in Chuck's recovery. Had he not been there, it seemed impossible for Chuck to come over his gloom. After Chuck started moving with the help of Duke, she consulted his doctor who advised physiotherapy for Chuck which he regularly followed.

Though she never liked Duke because she needed a Pomeranian dog for their small house when she saw Duke's loyalty towards his master she carried him to the car after he met with an accident. The incident shows her respect for the mute dog.
