they were surprised that there were written book too when they start the book they count something about old school . that there were real teachers and etc
they reacted that there's were written words and the pages were old and book was thick and etc

Margie was scornful,that how can someone write about school she didn't like the idea . but she wanted to know about the school in old times.. where as tommy found the book to be a waste that we need to throw it after reading,but he too wanted to know how schools used to be when his grandfather's grandfather was a kid
