Macchlipattnam (now known as Masulipatnam) grew in importance as a hub for international trade and commerce for the Dutch, English, and French. It also became a center for the weaving and dyeing industries.
The popularity of the city:
- Masulipatnam means "first port town" in Sanskrit. In the seventeenth century, it was a hive of activity. Both the Dutch and the English East Indian businesses wanted to control it as it quickly became Andhra Pradesh's most important port.
- The main cause for the city's popularity and wealth was a tax imposed by the Qutb-Shahi rulers of Golconda on the sale of textiles and spices in order to keep the trade from falling into the hands of the British East India Company.
