How did matter come into existence?

It is said that matter came into existence after big bang - a big explosion.It was the beginning of universe. It is said that, after big bang matter matter and anti-matter were produced equally but don't know why they don't why they annihilate each other. But, we aren't sure about it. There is also state steady theory which says that universe was there and will be forever.
