Bishops and abbots were the higher clergy and they collect 10% of the tax income (tithes) from church members and their own money at their use. This made the higher clergy very wealthy and supported their opulent lives. However, this money was supposed to be used for the people and this caused conflict between the people and the higher clergy members. The lower clergy were really part of the Third Estate just like the sans-culottes (the artisans in Paris) but none the less they were clergymen. They were favored more by the people for they helped socially and did not live frivolously.
