how did mendel explain it is possible that a trait is inherited but not expressed.answer in about 100 words and dont give me link of any site as ans!!

Mendel took two pure bred pea plants , one tall and the other short,and crossed it . He found that in the F1 generation, only tallness was expressed. He again took two plants from F1 generation and crossed them.This time he found , 3 plants were tall and 1 was short.
He concluded that shortness was inherited but it was not expressed in F1 generation. Later in F2 generation, it again appeared.
