Mendel when crossed two pea pla ts of tall and short height . The result was all the tall pea plant not a single short plant but when he self breed the tall plants he found the short plants also in next generation and tall and short plants were in the ratio 3:1 three tall and 1 short so here the short trait which was inherited was not able to express before was expressed in next generation

When Mendel cross pollinated a pure male tall pea plant with pure female dwarf pea plant,
he got only tall plants in F 1 generation. When F 1 tall plants were self pollinated, Mendel got both
tall and dwarf plants in F 2 generation, but it was not expressed and only trait of tallness was expressed. The character which gets expressed in the presence of its contrasting form is termed as dominant trait.
The trait which remains unexpressed in the presence of its contrasting form is termed as recessive trait.
Mendel called tall character as dominant and dwarf character as recessive
