Mendel proved his theory of inheritance using pea plants grown in the garden. When he cross bred a pea plant with tallness as the dominant trait and another pea plant with shortness as the recessive trait to recieve the F1 generation of plants , he noticed that tallness being the dominant trait was only expressed and shortness was not expressed . In the F1 progeny both the characters shortness and tallness was inherited SEPERATLEY but shortness was not expressed as it is a recessive trait . Hence Mendel showed through his experiments that inherited characters need not be expressed
