Mendeleev's periodic classification of elements.

Principle of his classification:

  • Dimitri Ivanovich Mendeleev arranged the elements based upon the two properties called atomic  mass and similar chemical properties.

Empty space in Mendeleev's periodic table:

  • He left empty spaces which are called gaps in his periodic table because he was sure that the undiscovered elements if discovered will surely fit in the gaps left by him.

Limitation of Mendeleev's classification:

  • The position of hydrogen in the Mendeleev's classification was not fixed and was confusing.
  • Mendeleev's classification has no space for isotopes.
