Miriam
Miriam is not introduced to the story until chapter eight, when Tsotsi, desperate to keep his child alive, threatens her with the life of her own child so that she will feed his. At first, she is seen by Tsotsi as a tool to be used in order to gain what he wants, although as the story progresses, he begins to value her and respect her as a mother who cares for her child. Miriam is shown to be a very caring woman in the text, proven several fact throughout the novel. She has cared for her own child without a thought for her own well-being, and even after being threatened, continues to care for Tsotsi’s child and even comes to love it. Near the end of the text, she comes to care for Tsotsi’s child so much that she offers to take it from him and care for it as though it were her own. Miriam is also perseverant and has the ability to move on. It is revealed that Miriam’s husband, Simon, went off to work one day and never returned, and as it dawns upon Miriam that he is most likely dead and never coming back, she resolves to move on instead of being defeated and consumed by despair and helplessness. Miriam can be described as the archetypal Good Mother. She is willing to make sacrifices for not only her child, but Tsotsi’s child as well. Christianity is a recurring theme throughout Tsotsi and Miriam is no exception. She represents Mother Mary. She cares for her child and offers to take on Tsotsi’s as well out of the goodness of her heart with the intention of treating with care and love. She shows Tsotsi that mothers do love their children and causes him to begin to respect woman in a way he never had before.
