Helen and Miss Sullivan would take walks together, out of which an old lumber-wharf by the Tennessee river was her favourite. Helen would sit there for hours and play with pebbles, making islands, digging river-beds etc. unaware that it was actually a lesson in Geography. Miss Sullivan would narrate to her tales about the world, and would make maps in clay for her to trace and understand. She also devised a method of using strings and an orange stick to represent the poles.
