History of Japan:

Japan was a remote country for a large portion of its history.During the 19th century, particularly after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, this started to drastically shift.

Imperial Japan:

  • Japan was a feudal society for hundreds of years, governed by warlords known as daimyos who, at times, were replaced by shoguns.
  • The shogun of Japan was a military dictator who was formally appointed by the emperor, but in reality, the shogun effectively held several emperors as hostages and provided them with a living stipend.

Up until the Meiji Restoration, when the emperor was given real power again and the shoguns were deposed, the shoguns were in charge of Japan.

Explanation:

  • Japan became a prominent global power as a result of modernization, enabling it to stave off European colonialism.
  • In addition to being able to quickly industrialise and develop a potent military, it was able to remove feudal power systems like the samurai.
  • As a result, it was able to conquer much of East Asia and even overthrow Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905.
  • Japan's continued military success, particularly its support of the Allies during the First World War, encouraged it to pursue the destructive militaristic strategy that led to its destruction in the Second World War.

According to Kitaoka, Japan's example is especially valuable because it was able to modernise while holding on to its own customs.

"Our assistance won't be able to persist for very long if we force it upon developing nations while disrespecting their cultures and customs.

Japan has advanced in modernization, concentrating its efforts on important aspects of infrastructure, public health, and education while simultaneously preserving our cherished culture and customs.

JICA aspires to support local cultures appropriately while providing the kinds of assistance that will be ingrained within those cultures.
