M. Hamel was exceptionally patient on the day of his last lesson. He looked quite somber. He did not scold Franz for being late and not answering the questions on participles.

He was full of patriotism that day. He aroused patriotic feelings in the people of Alsace by appealing to hold fast to their mother tongue to be free from the Prussians. He told his people that the French language was the most beautiful, the clearest and the most logical language in the world. He appealed to his countrymen to guard it and never forget it.

At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak. At last he wrote ‘Vive La France’, which means 'long live France' and gestured the dispersal.

TBH, this is not written by me but is written by a profesional teacher.

I hope it helps you
