Mr William Wade of Hulton, Pennsylvania was a family friend of Helen Keller. She had resided in his house when she and Miss Sullivan had gone to Hulton. Mr Wade was an extremely generous and helpful man whose friendship Helen greatly valued. He along with Mr Allen, Principal of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind, had procured many of the books Helen needed in raised print. This thoughtful gesture had encouraged Helen to continue with her studies in spite of several difficulties. Mr Wade's generosity and kindness was unparalleled, not just Helen but many others had also benefitted from it
