Arabs used to worship non-living things. Allah sent Muhammad (PBUH) and he spent his early 40 years without any sin. He was considered truthful and trustworthy and everyone was sure of his abilities before prophet hood. When he was made prophet after age 40 he preached it in his area, people knew he can never lie but still some could not leave the religion that was taught to them by their forefathers while others followed him. Soon, the non-followers started bycott and cut of their food and water but still Muhammad (PBUH) spread Islam through his moral values and unsullied character.
