On Oct 1999, while Musharraf was out of country and Sharif dissmissed him and tried to prevent the plane carrying Musharraf home from landing at the Karachi airport. The armed forces took control and paved the way for Musharraf to become head of military government. Musharraf dissolved the constitution and parliament. In early 2001 he assumed presidency.
