Muslim first came to assam in the early 13th century when Muhammad Bin Bakhtiyar khalji led an army in eastern India in 1205. A chieftain of the mech tribe converted to Islam at the invitation of khalji and adopted the name Ali Mech Raja

Islam was first introduced in Assam by Azan Faqir who have came from Baghdad in 17th century (1601-1700) during the reign of Ahom king Pratap Singha. He preach Islam to local indigenous assamese tribes in various parts of Assam.
