Sepoy mutiny became a popular rebellion especially among the soldiers mainly because the EIC hurt the religious sentiments of the soldiers- the Hindus had to bite off the cover of the bombs which was made of cow skin while the Muslims had to bite off the cover of the bombs made of pork. The Hindus who considered the cow their sacred animal and the Muslims who considered pigs to be evil because evil spirits have been enclosed in them got furious and the establishment of railways helped in connecting the soldiers throughout India which caused the rebellion to spread like a wildfire.

Moreover the fact that the British soldiers were given more salary and better provisions than the Indian Soldiers was another factor that led to fuel the fire of revenge. Only the British soldiers were promoted to higher ranks and the Indian Soldiers were kept suppressed with low ranks and posts.
