At first the narrator goes to Hariswami's haystack where the fire had caught that day. Then they placed some pieces of newspaper and they waited for the time when the fire was caught. They could see that a flash of light felt on the the pile and the newspaper had got fire.This happened because of the cylindrical glass piece,and by doing this they could find the real culprit.
