Explanation:

When Franz started for his school he was apprehensive, because he didn’t learn the chapter on participles. He thought that his teacher, M. Hamel, would reprimand him. On the way to school he thought of running away from school and spending his time elsewhere. Nevertheless, he restricted himself from doing that. He had rather counted upon the chaos, which was generally there in the classroom, to enter his classroom. He thought that during this chaos he would go into the class and hide himself in the last benches.

On the contrary, when he reached his school he found that unlike the usual days there were no hustles and bustles in the classroom, which could be heard easily from the streets. On that particular day the classroom was both silent and murky. It was in stark contrast to the bright and appealing weather outside. Everyone was sitting in their place without any kind of fuss like submissive student. It seemed like a Sunday to the author. Mr. Hamel was also a bit lost in his thoughts. When Franz entered the classroom, M. Hamel did not scold him as he had apprehended.
