Nationalism came with the sense of collective belonging to a place or region. They were also bound by their traditions and legacy.
Nation-state means a country with a political system.It was nation(a country with a defined area and geography) plus state(a country with a political system)

The idea of mation-state emerged after the French Revolution. Where people were struggling to get a nation based on a common identify of people of that area.
Example- Germany and Italy were united to form nation-states.
