Nicola and Jacopo are two 'true gentlemen' who decided to show courage and maturity even in adversity. Their sister Lucia, though, a good singer was diagnosed with tuberculosis of spine. Both of them, then willingly, thrived day and night, doing all kind of odd jobs, to provide for their sister's treatment. They did not consider any work to be menial. They were bend but not broken. The war definitely caused them a great deal of turmoil but their devotion and nobility stayed which made them fight through all the odds.
The statement, "Their selfless action bought a new nobility to human life, gave promise of a greater hope for human society", clearly refers to the selfless actions of the two boys, who worked hard to take care of their ailing sister. The war may have broken their family but did not succeed in breaking their spirit. They have a constant zest for life and this is quite evident in the smallest of the jobs they do to earn a living. The two boys are an example of how optimism and a zeal for life can be infectious enough for the whole world to follow and take lead.
