After their successful defeat of the Kalabhras, the Pallavas extended their territory as far south as the Cauvery River, and in the 7th and 8th centuries were at the height of their power, building major monuments such as the Shore Temple and Arjuna's Penance at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram).
