The people belonging to different communities, legends, languages, groups developed a sense of collective belongingness because of following reasons —
1. Image –
- In 20th century, the identification of India usually started with the image of Bharat Mata.
- Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay created the first image of Bharat Mata.
- He also wrote Vande Mataram.
- Also, Abanindranath Tagore painted another image of Bharat Mata.
- This image portrait Bharat Mata as an ascetic figure which was calm and composed, divine and spiritual.
2. Folklore –
- The ideas of nationalism also developed by folklore.
- The nationalists start recording sung by people in the village.
- Rabindranath Tagore, in Bengal, collected ballads, nursery rhymes and myths.
- In Madras, Natesa Sastri published a massive for volume collection of Tamil folk tales, which was called the folklore of Southern India.
3. Symbols and Icons –
- In Bengal, during the Swadeshi movement, a tricolour flag was designed that consisted red, green and yellow colours.
- It consisted 8 Lotus is representing 8 provinces of Britishers and the crescent moon representing Hindus and Muslims.
- In 1921, Gandhiji designed the Swaraj flag which consisted red, green and white it as tricolour.
- It consisted a spinning wheel in centre representing Gandhian ideal of self help.
4. History –
- The Britishers thought that Indians are primitive and are in capable of governing themselves.
- In response of this thought, Indians look the past discovered great achievements of India.
- They started writing about the glorious development in Asian times that India had achieved.
- They wrote about art and architecture, science and mathematics, etc. that Indians developed.
