How did people belonging to different communities, regions or language groups in India develop a sense of collective belonging? Elucidate.

This sense of collective belonging came partly through the experience of united struggles. A variety of cultural processes through which nationalism captured people’s imagination also came in handy. History and fiction, folklore and songs, popular prints and symbols, all played a part in the making of nationalism. The identity of the nation was most often symbolised in a figure or image. This helps create an image with which people can identify the nation. It was in the twentieth century, with the growth of nationalism, that the identity of India came to be visually associated with the image of Bharat Mata. The image was first created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.

Many factors played a role in the development of collective belonging...in India

1) The image of Bharat mata created by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya became the primary visual representation of Indian nation. Great artists and poets along with political leaders glorified the history of India and achievements...

2) The flag developed during the Swadeshi movement and the tricolour flag designed by Gandhiji both came to have great political importance for Indian public. This became a sign of defiance against the colonial government.

3) Nationalist leaders turned their attention to folk tales and ballads these had great cultural reach. Indian folklore was reinterpreted and used many a times for political propaganda.

4) Indians begin looking into the past to discover India's great achievements. They wrote about glorious developments in ancient times when art and architecture, science and mathematics, religion and culture, law and philosophy, crafts and trade had flourished.

5) during the Swadeshi Movement a tricolour flag was designed it had 8 lotuses representing 8 provinces of British India and a crescent moon representing Hindus and Muslim.

Gandhiji had designed the Swaraj flag it was a tricolour flag and had us spinning Wheel in the centre the presenting The Gandhian idea of self help
