nationalism developed amongst the people of india belonging to different sections if the society due to the economic exploitation by bristish leading to economic misery among the people. the repressive colonial policies also contributed to the cause. birth of social reform movements and the newspapers also played an important role in the process. ultimately, the indians realised that the panacea for all their problems lay in salvation from the british.

★ Image of bharat mata: the image was created by bankim chandra chattopadhya. It became popular in india and inspired many other artists such as rabindranah tagore. Bharat mata is shown as a calm,divine and spiritual lady providing learning, food and clothing.
★ Role of flags: the swadeshi and tricolor flag were of great importance because people would hold them during demonstrations, strikes etc to show that they are against the rule of british.
★ folk tales and ballads: illiterate people living in rural areas used to listen to these folk tales and ballads and would imagine their country being free and developed.Different types of people of any caste, religion or gender together listened to them.
★ harsh policies of british: the indians had different groups but yet all of them were against british as the government deprived them of all of their freedom and good jobs. Their only enemy was the british government which was slowly taking away precious resources and even people as slaves.
★ newspapers and patriotic songs: people were highly influenced by the newspapers as they were written against the harsh policies of british for example the vernacular press which was later seized. Also, the patriotic songs inspired indians to fight for their freedom.
