Answer:

The Indus Valley civilization was a very peaceful and flourishing civilization covering more than one million two hundred kilometers in present day Pakistan and North west India. Its peak was between 4000 to 5000 years ago. It was populated by a dark coloured people called Dravidians . Towards the dying stages of the civilization Caucasians from the steppes of Central asia entered this land on horse back . The IVC people were not familiar with the fast moving horse and realised they had no answer to the horse as a military animal. So they gave way to the Caucasians. The Caucasians were fire worshipers (which later was called Vedic yajna in India) and spoke an European language and imposed their culture on the IVC people. As they settled in they married the local women . In course of time a hybrid culture and language was formed . Bot many of the original inhabitants were not happy with the new situation and moved to the southern parts of India. The Vedic culture brought in its wake the four fold caste system which was not liked by the common man.

THE JAINAS

We know that Varthamana Mahavira lived in 6th century BCE and was a contemporary of Buddha. Mahavira was anti Vedic . Mahavira was the 24th Tirthankara . His immediate predecessor was Parasvanath who lived in the 8th century BCE. Before him was Nemmanath and Jain records say that he was a contemporary of Lord Krishna and that he was a guru of Krishna. The list thus goes back and the first Tirtankara was Rishabanath. Rishabanath’s son was Bharatha and then we can see the connection with Bharat - India.

A similar story is prevalent among the Hindus . In the dynasty of the Kurus a royal child was born to Sakunthala and the child’s name is Bharatha and hence Bharat the name of India.

As you can see the Jainas belonged to the elite section of Indian society even in ancient times and they were not happy with the Caucasian inspired Vedic yajnas and the caste system. They were the first people to offer resistance to the Brahmins.

Being an old community they might have had knowledge of the Dravidians moving to South India. This could be the reason why when Jains became more powerful in North India they also opened outposts in South India and in fact ruled from 3rd to 7th century CE in Tamilakan when there was a power vacuum.

CARVAKAS, BUDDHISTS and AJIVIKAS

The Carvakas were very learned and philosophical people who lived about 3000 years ago and who were also against the caste system and Vedas. Their writings are lost now but they were held in high esteem by Jainas , Buddhists and many Hindu sects.

The Buddhists as everyone knows were against the caste system and Vedic yajnas and similarly the Ajivikas.

Because of the combined resistance of all these groups the Brahmins and their supporters were checkmated for nearly 2000 years.

But during the Gupta period Brahmins were again given more power and casteism returned to India.
